The Four Seasons of Business, and Why each phase is so Important for Business Growth

What does ANTONIO VIVALDI and BUSINESS have in common? The answer is-‘The 4 Seasons’.

One of the greatest Italian Composers that ever lived was Antonio Vivaldi. His masterpiece ‘The 4 Seasons’, depicts the rawness & contrast of each season, namely, the cold and warmth; the sun & the snow; the stillness of Winter versus the dynamic Spring season, etc.

In business, just like in life, we are forced to accept and deal with all seasons, and the contrast of each phase. My view is that each period presents an excellent opportunity to focus on ALL facets of the business, and the chance to exploit the ‘quietness’ or ‘energetic’ phase of each season. This view is expressed by many business leaders, business experts, and serial entrepreneurs like Stephanie Pollock. One of her favourite quotes is:

“We cannot stop the winter or the summer from coming. We cannot stop the spring or the fall or make them other than they are. They are gifts from the universe that we cannot refuse. But we can choose what we will contribute to life when each arrives.”

Many small business owners or startup entrepreneurs that I have coached shy away from the Winter season, or feel discouraged by the ‘stillness’ or lack of sales activity.

My advice is that this is the best time to review your business model; to invest your time in research, planning, etc; to explore new areas for growth; to meet up with people & discusss new ideas, etc.

When the Spring season eventually emerges, you willl be in a ready position to tackle growth & the new challenges that a dynamic Spring season will present.

My conclusive remark is that there is a time of ‘reaping the harvest’, but also a time to ‘sow the seeds’.
